Calderdale CCG:

Medicines Waste Campaign

Description – Calderdale CCG seeks expressions of interest from suitably experienced and qualified service providers who would like to be considered for the provision of a medicines waste campaign within Calderdale in the first or second quarter of 2014/15. We wish to reduce the level of medicines waste in Calderdale by engaging with the public through GP practices, community pharmacies and through local advertising for example on local public transport. The campaign must include high quality posters and patient information which can be collected from GP practices and community pharmacies and provided proactively from these locations. The key messages of the campaign would be around ordering only what medicines are required, highlighting the costs to the NHS of waste medication and raising awareness that medicines cannot be recycled, as well as the importance of discussing medicines with health professionals on a regular basis. Secondary messages would include the safe disposal of medication and not sharing medicines. The benefits to the CCG should include a reduction in the volume of prescribing in the 3 months following the end of the campaign, improved patient understanding regarding waste medication and promoting improved communication between patients and health professionals.
